Drawing the other half: symmetry as a mirror, not a copy
Completing a symmetrical picture is not the same as drawing the shape again on the other side. Every point has to sit the same distance from the line as its partner, and facing the other way. Children who treat the task as copying produce a picture that looks roughly right and is not symmetrical at all.
What your child is actually learning
Symmetry work at this age builds spatial reasoning: holding a shape in mind, reflecting it, and reproducing it accurately. The mirror line is the key idea, and the useful rule is about distance. If a corner sits three squares to the left of the line, its partner sits three squares to the right. Grid paper makes this countable rather than approximate, which is why these pages use it.
How to work through these pages
Use a small mirror if you have one, stood upright on the line. Seeing the completed picture appear in the mirror before drawing it turns an abstract instruction into something observable. The mistakes to expect

Does the mirror line always have to be vertical?
No. It can be horizontal or diagonal, and a diagonal line is much harder. Most first grade work uses vertical lines, which is the sensible place to start.
My child’s drawing is neat but not symmetrical. What is going wrong?
Almost always the distance from the line rather than the shape. Ask them to count the squares on each side for one corner and compare; the error usually becomes obvious to the child immediately.
Is this maths or art?
Both, and that is part of why it works. The reasoning is geometric, and the fact that the result is a picture keeps children engaged with a task that is genuinely demanding.
