Free Fourths Worksheets for Kindergarten – Four Equal Parts of Shapes

These free printable fourths worksheets help kindergarten and first grade children learn about four equal parts, also called quarters. In each row a shape is cut into four parts in three different ways, and kids circle the one that is cut into four equal parts. Four equal parts are all exactly the same size, like cutting a sandwich into four matching pieces. Fourths come right after halves and are an early step toward fractions. The final page is an answer key. Just download, print, and find the fourths!

Fourths: halving twice, and the surprise that more parts means smaller

A fourth is what you get when you halve a shape and then halve it again. Because the step is a repeat of something children already know, fourths usually arrive easily. What does not arrive easily is the idea that four parts are smaller than two parts, even though four is the bigger number.

What your child is actually learning

Alongside the partitioning itself, first grade standards ask children to notice that decomposing a shape into more equal shares creates smaller shares. This runs against everything a child has learned about numbers so far, where bigger numbers have meant more. It is the first genuinely counter-intuitive idea in the maths curriculum, and it deserves to be taught head-on rather than mentioned in passing.

How to work through these pages

Fold once, open, look, fold again. Doing it in two visible steps makes the relationship between halves and fourths obvious. Then make the comparison directly: put a half of one paper next to a fourth of an identical paper and ask which piece is bigger. Children who have only worked on separate shapes never get to make this comparison, which is why the misunderstanding survives.

The mistakes to expect

  • Believing a fourth is bigger than a half because four is bigger than two. Expect this, and plan for it rather than treating it as carelessness.
  • Producing four pieces that are not equal, usually by folding twice in the same direction unevenly.
  • Assuming fourths must be four squares. A circle cut into four, or a rectangle cut into four strips, are equally correct.
  • Confusing the words quarter and fourth. They mean the same thing, and it is worth using both so neither is a surprise.

What to teach next

Thirds are the natural companion and are noticeably harder, because they cannot be reached by folding in half. Beyond fractions, telling time to the half hour uses the same partitioning idea applied to a circle, which is a useful connection to point out.

Questions parents ask

Is a quarter the same as a fourth?

Yes. American curriculum documents tend to say fourths, everyday speech tends to say quarters, and the coin has the same name for the same reason.

Should the four parts be identical in shape?

They must be equal in size. In first grade the examples almost always look identical too, which is fine, but it is worth mentioning that equal size is the actual requirement.

How does this connect to money and time?

Directly, and the connection helps. A quarter is a fourth of a dollar, and quarter past means a fourth of the way round the clock. Children who see fractions living outside the maths worksheet remember them better.
