Free Letter Before and After Worksheets for Kindergarten – Alphabet Order

Alphabet

These free printable letter before and after worksheets give kindergarten children sixty alphabet problems. Each one shows a letter with an empty box on each side, and the child writes the letter that comes before it and the letter that comes after.

Two answers per problem, and the harder one is always the first box. Children who know the alphabet as a song can run forwards from a letter easily; running backwards from it is a different skill, and it is the one this pack builds.

Pages 1 to 4 use capital letters, pages 5 to 7 use small ones, and pages 8 to 10 mix the two on the same sheet.

What Is in This Free Before and After Worksheet Pack

  • Ten printable worksheets with six problems on each – sixty in all, and a hundred and twenty letters to write.
  • Capitals on pages 1 to 4, small letters on pages 5 to 7, and both mixed on pages 8 to 10.
  • Twenty-two different letters appear in the middle. A, M, Q and Z never do.
  • An eleventh page with all sixty answers written out as three-letter runs.
  • A separate PDF for every page, free to download and print.

The 11 Before and After Worksheets

A and Z can never be the letter in the box, because neither has a neighbor on both sides. That is a small, clean piece of logic and it is worth asking a child about once they have done a few pages: which letter could never go in the middle?

Beyond that the pack spreads itself evenly. S is the most common middle letter at seven appearances, then E and X at five each. The runs overlap on purpose – QRS and RST on page 3, cde and def on page 6 – so the same letters turn up in different jobs.

Worksheet 1 – KLM, JKL, MNO, QRS, DEF, RST

The six answers on this page are KLM, JKL, MNO, QRS, DEF, RST.

Capital letters throughout, and every triple sits in the middle of the alphabet where children are most confident.

The child writes two letters for each problem: the one before and the one after. Both boxes matter, and children who are quick tend to fill the after box and forget the before one.

Worksheet 2 – OPQ, DEF, GHI, RST, UVW, IJK

The six answers on this page are OPQ, DEF, GHI, RST, UVW, IJK.

Six more capitals, reaching further up the alphabet with UVW and further down with DEF.

IJK closes the page. The run I, J, K is the one most often sung wrong, because it comes in the fast part of the alphabet song.

Worksheet 3 – QRS, RST, NOP, TUV, KLM, CDE

The six answers on this page are QRS, RST, NOP, TUV, KLM, CDE.

QRS, RST and TUV overlap deliberately: the same letters appear in different positions on the same page.

R is the middle letter in one problem and a neighbor in the next. Noticing that is a sign a child is reading the alphabet rather than reciting it.

Worksheet 4 – STU, KLM, RST, WXY, DEF, XYZ

The six answers on this page are STU, KLM, RST, WXY, DEF, XYZ.

XYZ is here, and it is the only problem in the pack that reaches Z. Y is one of the four letters a child is least sure of.

Note that Z itself is never the letter in the middle, and neither is A. Neither has a neighbor on both sides, so neither can be asked.

Letter before and after worksheet 4 for kindergarten - write the letter before and after: STU, KLM, RST, WXY, DEF, XYZ

Worksheet 5 – stu, wxy, cde, ijk, rst, uvw

The six answers on this page are stu, wxy, cde, ijk, rst, uvw.

Small letters from here. Same task, harder letters: lowercase shapes are less distinct and children have had less practice writing them.

stu, wxy and uvw all sit at the end of the alphabet, which is the part that gets sung fastest and learned last.

Letter before and after worksheet 5 for kindergarten - write the letter before and after: stu, wxy, cde, ijk, rst, uvw

Worksheet 6 – ijk, def, cde, hij, rst, vwx

The six answers on this page are ijk, def, cde, hij, rst, vwx.

Six lowercase triples in the first half of the alphabet, which makes this the gentlest of the small-letter pages.

cde and def overlap the same way QRS and RST did on page 3.

Letter before and after worksheet 6 for kindergarten - write the letter before and after: ijk, def, cde, hij, rst, vwx

Worksheet 7 – mno, nop, ghi, opq, qrs, wxy

The six answers on this page are mno, nop, ghi, opq, qrs, wxy.

mno, nop and opq – three overlapping runs in the middle of the alphabet, on one page.

The letters m, n and o in sequence are the most common place for a child to lose their footing, because the song runs them together.

Worksheet 8 – DEF, UVW, tuv, bcd, nop, WXY

The six answers on this page are DEF, UVW, tuv, bcd, nop, WXY.

Capitals and small letters on the same page for the first time, and they change without warning from row to row.

A child has to notice the case as well as the letter. DEF and tuv ask for the same skill and look nothing alike.

Letter before and after worksheet 8 for kindergarten - write the letter before and after: DEF, UVW, tuv, bcd, nop, WXY

Worksheet 9 – QRS, fgh, WXY, GHI, OPQ, ABC

The six answers on this page are QRS, fgh, WXY, GHI, OPQ, ABC.

ABC appears here – the only triple in the pack that starts at the very beginning, with B in the middle.

Mixed cases again, with fgh sitting between two capital triples.

Worksheet 10 – EFG, cde, GHI, mno, ABC, RST

The six answers on this page are EFG, cde, GHI, mno, ABC, RST.

The last page mixes cases one more time and ends on RST, a run that has appeared on four separate pages.

RST is the most repeated run in the pack, which makes the last row a comfortable place to finish.

Answer Key – All 60 Problems

The eleventh sheet writes out all sixty answers as complete three-letter runs, six to a page.

Reading it aloud is a useful exercise in itself: sixty short stretches of the alphabet, none of them starting at A.

Why Backwards Is the Hard Direction

Ask a child what comes after P and most will run the song from the nearest point they are sure of. Ask what comes before P and the same strategy does not work: they have to start at A and stop just short, or they have to actually know the neighbor.

That is the whole value of this pack. Sixty problems, each asking for both directions, is enough repetition to turn a sung alphabet into a known one. A child who can answer the before box without singing has moved from reciting to knowing.

It also explains where the mistakes will be. Expect the after boxes to be right and the before boxes to be blank or wrong, page after page, until they suddenly are not.

When Children Are Ready for Before and After

  • Age: about five to six – kindergarten, once the alphabet can be recited without help.
  • Before starting: the child should be able to write both capital and lowercase letters. This pack asks for a hundred and twenty of them.
  • RF.K.1.D – recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Alphabetical order itself becomes useful later, when children start using a glossary, an index or a dictionary.

How to Use These Worksheets

  1. Have an alphabet strip or chart nearby for the first page or two, then take it away.
  2. Do the after box first and the before box second, and say both out loud.
  3. When a child is stuck on the before box, say three letters ending at theirs – “n, o, p” – rather than telling them the answer.
  4. Keep capitals and small letters apart at first: pages 1 to 4, then 5 to 7. The mixed pages at the end are the test.
  5. Ask which letter could never be in the middle. A and Z, and working that out is worth more than a page of answers.
  6. Check against page 11, which prints every run in full.

Three Things to Watch For

1. The before box left empty. This is the expected mistake and not a sign of trouble. Going backwards through the alphabet is genuinely harder than going forwards.

2. Case drifting on the mixed pages. From page 8 the case changes row by row, and children write a capital next to a small letter without noticing. Point at the middle letter and ask what kind it is before they write.

3. Singing from A every time. It works and it is slow. The aim is to answer from the letter itself, and the way to get there is to ask for the neighbor of a letter in the middle of the alphabet, over and over, which is what this pack does.

Printing Tips

  • Print at 100 percent, actual size, on A4 or US Letter. The answer boxes need their full size for young handwriting.
  • Black and white is fine throughout.
  • Print pages 1 to 4 as one batch and 5 to 7 as another. Mixing cases too early makes the pack harder than it needs to be.
