These free printable middle sounds worksheets help kindergarten children hear the short vowel in the middle of a word, the step that comes after beginning sounds and ending sounds. Every word is a simple word with one vowel in the middle, such as cat, bed, pig, dog, and sun, and each one is shown as a picture with the first and last letters already written. The pages alternate between two tasks so children are not doing the same thing ten times: on half of them children circle the vowel from three choices, and on the other half they write the missing vowel in the box with a e i o u listed at the top for help. Hearing the middle sound is the hardest of the three sounds for young children, because it is not at the start or the end of the word, so it is worth plenty of practice. The first page explains the idea with five example words, and the final page is an answer key. Just download, print, and sound it out!
